Custom TWAIN Controller Interface
Why
use TWAIN?
The TWAIN standard is a well defined and widely
supported image acquisition standard utilized by software packages
to acquire
images and image data from a wide range of imaging hardware
without having
to make special customizations. Since a vast majority (if not
all) of the imaging products or products that utilize imaging
in some
form are TWAIN compliant, integrating a TWAIN source automatically
introduces many hardware capture options into software
packages without requiring changes in the target applications.
In addition,
due to the nature of TWAIN, changes to your hardware and/or drivers
only require changes to the TWAIN source and not to any of the
applications that utilize the imaging hardware through the TWAIN
standard.
But won't it take a long time to custom develop a new TWAIN interface
for third-party software?
One disadvantage used to be that producing a TWAIN source required
more time to program and produce a deliverable than that for a
toolkit.
This
is due to the fact that not only does the software-to-hardware
interface have to be developed (just as for the toolkit) but also
the TWAIN software-to-software protocol.
Apteryx has changed that by creating a TWAIN interface that only
requires a few changes before we can deliver it. We have shortened
a process that used to take weeks to only a couple days.
